We all have those times when we start feeling a tad uninspired by our surroundings and feel the need for a change of scenery. At times, that simply means that I need to get out of the house, go for a walk and end up at a coffee shop with my computer. On other occasions, it requires a week long trip somewhere completely different to fully recharge my inspiration tank. However, time doesn't always permit such a luxury and when such a situation arises, one of the best options is to partake in a small staycation here in the city itself. With that in mind, I packed a small overnighter bag and headed over to the Shangri-La hotel.
While this marks my first time staying at the hotel, I have been at the institution multiple times prior for meals. Bosk restaurant is housed on the main floor and the adjoining Momofuku, with its three tiers of restaurants, is a renowned import hailing from New York. Patrons are also given the opportunity to sit down by the fire places in the hotel lobby to enjoy a cocktail (or five) or to partake in a lovely afternoon High Tea with friends. The common area features a rotating exhibit of iconic designer dresses and live koi fish swim along in an aquarium encased in the floor. You read that right. One of my favourite things about the Shangri- La is the distinctive scent being diffused throughout the hotel that hits you the moment you enter the amenities.
Given its luxury five star rating, it is needless to say that the hotel is absolutely gorgeous. Named after a Himalayan paradise in James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon, The Shangri-La displays prominent asian influences in its overall aesthetic. Warm wooden tones are noticeable throughout the hotel and asian art can often be found at the turn of a corridor. One of the distinctive features of the Shangri- La hotels is their beautiful washrooms in floor-to-ceiling white marble. It truly is an Instagrammer’s dream come true.
The hotel amenities are located on the fifth floor and they include a decently sized gym and a beautiful swimming pool area, complete with saunas, steam rooms, a jacuzzi and lovely curtained cabanas where one feels that they could spend a lifetime. On this floor, you will also find the Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris, an award winning spa that exclusively uses products from the beloved french skincare brand. It should be noted that you can book a massage there even if you are not staying at the hotel and you’d be able to enjoy the Health Club amenities for the rest of the day.
After a lovely two days at the hotel, I definitely feel ready to tackle the week ahead even though I would much rather remain here. The level of service and the attention to details truly makes you feel that you have indeed arrived at the mystical paradise.
