Engagement and Bright Smiles / by Didier Young

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for the warm congratulations regarding my engagement at the beginning of the year. Last year was an eventful one for me but getting engaged was definitely the most memorable part of it. I originally wanted to keep it on the down low for a little bit so that it would be something special and private between me and my close ones but I definitely feel that it is time for Andrew and I to go public about it.

Of course, now it’s time to plan the wedding! While we don’t have very much planned out yet, we are definitely thinking of having a wedding ceremony in September 2020 somewhere in Italy (we are currently toying with the idea of the Amalfi Coast or Positano). Part of me is also debating if we should just skip all of it and just head to City Hall and just get married tomorrow instead. What I do know for sure is that there will be lots of photos being taken to commemorate our union no matter how we end up getting married. That being said, with it being such a happy occasion there’s definitely going to be lots of teeth showing as we are bound to be smiling on the happiest day of our lives. One of the many things that I am self conscious about is my teeth. Even though I do brush them twice daily, they aren’t necessarily at their prime pearly whiteness due to years of daily tea and coffee drinking. I usually use a whitening toothpaste as well but I do feel that those tend to be more preventive of further damage rather than actually whitening the enamel.

So I had two choices: I could go to the dentist and spend a fortune on teeth whitening or I could give at- home whitening a try. Given how much weddings cost nowadays, I decided to go ahead with the latter and I picked up a pack of Crest 3D White Whitestrips with Light. Obviously I did my research prior to the purchase as I had heard many horror stories when it came to whitening kits but the consensus was that Crest’s whitening technology was the best one available on the market. The procedure is quite simple: apply the top and bottom strips on your teeth, wait for an hour and then use the light device on both the top and bottom rows until the light turns off. The box comes with enough strips for ten treatments and it is meant to last for up to 36 months. I started noticing a major colour difference after the third usage and I am happy to say that I didn’t have any issues other than minor teeth sensitivity which is easily remedied upon with some potassium nitrate (basically every sensitive toothpaste on the market).

I also wanted to share the story of how we met and how it all went down. We haven’t been together for very long. We were not high school sweethearts nor did we go to university together. We actually met over our shared passion for photography right on Instagram. After months of talking via DM about shooting spots, the best Toronto coffee shops, aperture settings and our desire to travel, we finally decided to meet up for coffee on one crisp November afternoon. What was supposed to be a casual coffee meet up ended up turning into a six hour stroll throughout the city and we both decided to meet again the week later for a terrarium class. We met once a week for a little bit, then it became twice and thrice a week up until the point where Andrew was basically just living at my place so we decided to simply move in together.

Things were smooth sailing and it felt as if I had known Andrew for years instead of a couple of months. I would frequently tease him about the fact that he better put a ring on my finger soon enough but I never thought much of it. We took a small trip to Miami last summer and the girls had to go and visit one of Joelle’s friends so Andrew and I were left on our own for a few hours. We walked across the pastel city, enjoyed the views of the Design district and rushed to the beach to contemplate the famous pink sunsets of South Beach. By the time we got there, it was already starting to get dark but Andrew insisted that we walked on the beach even though we were already late for our dinner with the girls. While I was nervously trying to reach the girls to let them know of our delay, Andrew realized that this proposal wouldn’t go the way he fully imagined and he decided to propose right there. Even though the conditions were not optimal to him, I would not change a single second of it.

Ever since using the Crest 3D White Whitestrips, I have been far less self conscious about my smile and i haven’t been as worried about cracking one from time to time. That’s one less thing that I have to worry about on the day that will change my life forever for the better.
