How to Maintain your White Shirts in the Summer / by Didier Young

After an interesting Spring season in Toronto that has earned the city the nickname ToRAINto (at least in my books), I will admit that I am looking forward to the hot days ahead. Summer obviously has a lot of pros: drinking sangrias on patios, laying down in the park with a brand new book, cold brew coffee and most of all ice-cream. However, when you’re a guy, summer also means dumbing down your daily outfits to a max of two clothing pieces. While girls have the option of beautiful floral dresses and cute rompers, the selection for men is a bit lacking especially if you’re used to only wearing solid colours. As such, I have found that season after season, I tend to go back to the same staple look during the hot months: a white t-shirt and shorts.

While most of you are used to seeing me only wearing blue, I will admit to having an affinity for white tops. However, I often shy away from purchasing the neutral colour due to its propensity to turn yellow quite quickly, especially when you’re breaking into a sweat after taking ten steps during summer. Of course, one way to avoid the colour change would be to keep washing your white shirts after wearing them for the day but if you’re not careful, your clothing will soon start piling or losing shape. This is due to the relentless agitation and high speed spinning that your clothes go through during the cleaning process and the intense heat from the dryer often causes damage to the fabric. For this blog post, I am happy to be partnering with Downy and their fantastic fabric conditioner.

The Downy fabric conditioner acts very similarly to a hair conditioner. After using your shampoo, your hair is squeaky clean but often needs a little bit of extra love. When you use your favourite conditioner, you are coating your hair with a nourishing barrier that helps to heal and protect it from external damage. Downy fabric conditioner does something quite similar to your clothing during the wash. By lubricating the fibres of the fabric, Downy makes them less likely to break, which in turn decreases piling and helps the clothes retain their original shape and brightness. The protection it offers also helps to reduce abrasion from daily wear which increases the longevity of your favourite fashion pieces so you can wear them season after season.

I am definitely a huge fan of the conditioner as it has allowed my white tee shirts to remain soft, pile free and crisp wash after wash. Plus it smells absolutely fantastic which always earns brownie points in my books. Now, if only I could learn to stop spilling coffee all over myself, life would be really, really good.
