Skincare Review: Dior Dreamskin, CaptureYouth and Backstage / by Didier Young

Dior. The celebrated Parisian Fashion House is a household name that does not require an introduction. To most people, Dior is mostly known for its fragrances (Chalize Theron’s J’Adore will forever be one of the most iconic fragrance imageries in my mind) and for its line of sunglasses. Beyond that, fashion lovers will recognize the brand’s iconic oblique monogram print, trendy newly-revived saddle bag and perhaps the memorable John Galliano newspaper print made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker during the Sex and the City days. However, Dior has more than one jewel in its crown and the brand’s portfolio also includes gorgeous makeup collections and skincare lines. I recently attended a preview for Dior makeup, skincare and perfume and I was lucky enough to take some of their products home. In today’s blog post, I’d like to talk a bit about a few of their newest skincare launches.

Some people think that you should not mess with perfection. Dior is not one of those people. Launched in 2014, Dior Dreamskin Perfect Skin Creator revolutionized people’s beauty routines and became a global best-seller that provided immediate skin perfecting results while also having long-term anti-aging properties that perfect the skin from within. After more than eight hundred new formula tests since the first composition, the skincare product evolved in 2016 and once again in 2019 to become Dreamskin Care & Perfect. Formulated with more natural-origin ingredients including marine sugar and French Alpine water, the Perfect Skin Creator cares for and perfects your skin (as its name entails). I was absolutely blown away with the immediate results of the product. My skin looked hydrated and well rested with a lovely glow within minutes of the application. While I haven’t had a chance to put the product’s long term claims to the test yet, I was so impressed by the immediate results that it automatically found a place on my vanity. Please note that this product does not replace a moisturizer and is meant to be a finishing touch, much like a primer.

To complete the perfection program, Dior also reformulated the Dreamskin mask to become a highly active gel-cream peeling mask that can create a “new skin” effect in a single minute. Peeling masks are a tricky one for many people with sensitive skin especially when it comes to high performance products like this one. However, I found that the gel-cream texture has a very soothing feel and it is not overly fragrant which would indicate that it might still be a good product for people with sensitive skin. It is super easy to use: just apply on the face, listen to a third of a song and then remove it off with a wet sponge. Much like the Perfect Skin Creator, I was surprised by how instantly effective the peeling mask was. The mask has a balance of AHAs and Opilia+ Longoza complex mixed with jojoba oil which help to create a solid hydrolipidic film. In simpler words, they help to smooth and hydrate your skin while enabling it to retain more moisture. Dreamskin also had a tightening effect on my skin and made it look refreshed while still remaining supple. Due to the high potency of the product, it is recommended to only use it up to three times a week so make sure not to overdo it.

To round off the skincare routine, I decided to include the Dior Capture Youth Age Delay Progressive Peeling Creme. I’ve used this one on and off for a few months now and it is absolutely lovely. It is an antioxidant-rich cream that protects and strengthens the skin and it works for most skin types (I would skin test if you are super sensitive just because of its peeling properties). The gel-cream is infused with a technology that supports gentle cellular renewal and exfoliates your skin while delivering anti-oxidants which are primordial when it comes to anti-aging products. I have been very vocal when it comes down to skincare scents. Scents are an important factor for me and if it doesn’t smell good or if it smells too overwhelming, it is not going on my skin. Thankfully, all the Dior products have been beautifully scented and have caused me no issues whatsoever.

I have been very fresh-faced lately and usually leave the house with only concealer and highlight on my face. The Dior BACKSTAGE Glow Face Palette has been my go-to lately with its highlight & blush combo in shades that are universally appealing. Available in a Universal and a Glitz version, the Glow Face Palette is a gorgeous palette with finely milled powders which blend beautifully on the skin. It is buildable which makes it perfect for everyone, whether you want a light glow or if you want to achieve a glowing goddess look. Due to the versatile nature of the palette, it may be used in more ways than one and you could even use them as eyeshadows if it so pleases you. I am currently tanned so I find that the golden shade works great as a highlighter for my cheekbones but I will sometimes intensify the look by blending in some of the white as well, especially on the cupid’s bow and tip of the nose. The palette is meant to be played with and customized which I find to be quite a refreshing idea.

So far, I have been very impressed with the quality of the Dior products that I have tried. They are definitely part of the luxury realm of beauty and skincare but I will say that the price range is a bit lower than some of their other high-end designer competitors (looking at you Chanel and Tom Ford). I would definitely recommend stopping by your local Dior counter or Sephora to check out the products and to give them a try before making a purchase but I do personally love them and I am more than likely to be a recurring customer from now on.
